Durch Bruch
Our Easter installation "Durch Bruch" (Break Through) explores the tension between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. A fragile paper screen, printed with words gathered from passers-by about Good Friday, obscures the window—and with it, the Easter scene beyond. Most responses reflect distance or ambiguity: for many, Good Friday remains an empty, undefined day.
The paper acts as a veil, blocking access to Easter’s deeper meaning. Just as Jesus’ vulnerability—meant to demonstrate His love for humanity—invites abuse, the paper’s fragility invites viewers to tear through it. This act echoes the tearing of the temple curtain on Good Friday, which, according to Christian tradition, signified the opening of access to God for all through Jesus’ sacrificial death.
Behind the screen, a kitschy, harmonious Easter world emerges—a glimpse of the life and hope Easter promises.
Through contrasts of visibility and concealment, kitsch and depth, vulnerability and hope, the work frames Easter as a festival of renewal and breakthrough—a foretaste of a reconciled world where life triumphs.
