Summer 2024

Ich bin der ich bin

The temporary art installation "ICH BIN DER ICH BIN" (I AM WHO I AM) on the façade of The Limelight Collective aims to engage viewers on multiple levels and invite them to grapple with existential questions.

On one level, the biblical inscription in yellow and black lettering picks up on the postmodern search for identity and relates it to God's self-revelation to Moses in the burning bush. The choice of colours and the individual brushstroke design of the oversized letters alludes to the Trinity of God and the inadequacy of human statements to fully grasp the divine nature.

On another level, the installation functions as a provocative intervention that raises claims to absolute truth in an age of general questioning. It invites viewers to confront the existence of a higher being that defines itself as "I Am Who I Am," thereby transcending any human relativisation.

Moreover, the work addresses the ambivalent attitude of humanity towards God that has emerged in the art scene, and relates it to God's attitude towards humanity: Although the history of the church has been marked by misunderstandings and suffering caused by absolutist images of God, God nevertheless still chooses to reveal himself through human mediation - with all the risks of being misunderstood.

The temporary nature of the installation amidst an ongoing building renovation also signals that God continues to be alive and present in the world, even though his revelation remains fragmentary.
